The Thomas Pheasant Outdoor Collection | March 2007
SAN FRANCISCO (March 31, 2007) ? McGuire, a leader in contemporary furniture design, has long recognized the need for handcrafted furniture that has the flexibility to speak to a broad audience and complement a range of architectural styles. In its latest collection, created exclusively for outdoor environments, McGuire partnered with internationally renowned interior designer, Thomas Pheasant. It is an alliance that began in 2004 with a successful line of living room, dining room and occasional pieces and has expanded to include The Thomas Pheasant Outdoor Collection of 17 pieces, an expressive compilation of modern forms.
The collection, handcrafted of woven resin fibers and powder coated aluminum frames, includes a sofa, a single and double chaise, four chairs, a bench and ottoman, two dining tables, three occasional tables, a bar cart, and unique týte-ý-týte style bench. All pieces are available in Java with bronze frames or Pearl with white frames.
Inspired by classic form, Pheasant approached these designs with the eye of an artist, creating pieces that are functional and versatile, imparting strength of line and a timelessness that does not emphasize one era or style. "Bringing modern edges to classic forms and shapes is the foundation of my design vocabulary," explained Pheasant. "I will forever be a student of great design, and have always been intuitive to my surroundings. This has been heightened by my travels abroad. I have an apartment in Paris, allowing me to experience the French culture by actually living it. Sculpture, architecture, inspired form? these are my touchstones, where I find my energy and inspiration."
Resonating with the classic sensibility found in his earlier designs, Pheasant created a collection that showcases the unique handcraftsmanship synonymous with McGuire with a practicality to endure a range of climate conditions. For its strength, ease of maintenance and lightweight quality, Pheasant chose woven resin fibers and aluminum frames as his medium.
"We are excited to bring a designer of Tom's caliber to the woven outdoor category, where he has created a collection that is the perfect outdoor complement to the acclaimed indoor collection he recently designed for McGuire," says Jason Phillips ? President, McGuire. "His forms breathe new life into the outdoor category, showcasing the artistry of the weavers as well as the welders who have meticulously joined the frames; together, their work lends the pieces a balance that speaks to strength and comfort."
Frameless cabinetry is characterized by its seamless, clean exterior design with no visual interruption due to face frames or center posts. For extra durability, the door hinges are mounted to the cabinet wall. Framed cabinetry is evident by its visible frames between the doors and drawers with the cabinetry door hinges mounted to the face frame. With an exposed frame, the size of the door and drawer are reduced, limiting storage space. Some framed manufacturers will conceal the exterior face frames and posts to take on the look of a Canac full-access cabinet and will charge their customers extra to create these special overlays.
To create the modern silhouettes, resin fibers are expertly woven onto aluminum frames, the intricate weave creating a textural design that complements the sleek aluminum. Offered in two paint finishes, Java, a deep, warm golden brown, and Pearl, a soft, ivory-to-white, the woven resin is also UV and bacteria resistant, keeping colors true for years to come. The aluminum frames are powder coated in complementing colors of Bronze (on the dark frames) or Seashell White (for the light frames) for seamless, tone-on-tone shading. All cushions are constructed using drainable foam; the loose cushion design affords easy cleaning and storage, while remaining lightweight and extremely durable. The tables and bar cart are fitted with tempered, polished glass tops that rest flat within surrounding frames for easy cleaning and sleek, uninterrupted silhouettes.
"Outdoor furniture has to speak to its surroundings and remain beautiful," continued Pheasant. "There are few choices in the marketplace today that effectively bring fine design to the outside and still maintain the level of comfort and luxury one expects from an indoor environment."
The collection offers freedom to choose components based upon space, individual taste and entertaining style. One example is the Bar Cart, an understated design of sheer sophistication. Textured resin is expertly woven by hand onto the aluminum frame to create its base. The rectangular top of clear, tempered glass has flat polished edges and sits flush within the exposed frame. A lower, single shelf of woven resin rests above a base enclosing a single drawer for discreet storage (and use as a tray), while casters provide easy mobility and charm.
Form meets function in an inspired Single and Double Chaise design. An adjustable platform supports a loose back cushion and removable head rest. When level, the platform sits flush within the base that features the collection?s unique, cut-out design. Straight aluminum legs are joined in a distinctive double X-stretcher design. Mirroring all the beauty of the Single Chaise, the Double Chaise has been engineered allowing each side to work independently.
A series of dining and occasional tables continue the thoughtful execution and speak to the range of options. Expertly crafted from aluminum and clear tempered glass, the collection features a generous rectangular Cocktail Table, Round Side Table and Spot Table, both scaled to accommodate urban or smaller spaces. The well proportioned 42" Square Dining Table features a simple, geometric design, while the Round Pedestal Dining Table offers a generous 60-inch diameter. Both feature a center hole in the frame to accommodate an umbrella.
"Given their proportions and materials, these pieces are perfectly scaled for urban balconies and luxury yachts, as well as for oceanside resorts and boutique spas," adds Phillips.
Drawing upon Pheasant's love for French design is the engaging Back to Back Bench. Inspired by 18th century French design, the resin fibers are intricately woven to create its romantic týte-ý-týte shape. Each side is set with a single loose, cylindrical bolster cushion above a generous seat cushion. The high sides are interrupted with a centered, cut-out design revealing the powder coated aluminum frame. A deck of woven resin sits above six straight aluminum legs joined by a double X-stretcher.
Rounding out the collection is a series of upholstered lounge pieces including a Sofa and a Slipper Chair, a form rarely offered in an outdoor line. The sofa provides a deep, comfortable seat, yet is appropriately scaled to fit smaller spaces. Handcrafted from woven resin, the sofa has a straight back that supports two loose, generous back cushions above two loose seat cushions complemented by kidney pillows. Flanking the cushions are straight arms detailed in the collection's signature cut-out design. The sofa is supported by six legs met with X-stretchers. The clean, unrestrained design of the Slipper Chair is also crafted from woven resin and fitted with loose cushions. The seat cushion is surrounded by low sides revealing a smooth length of powder coated aluminum and rests on elegant aluminum legs joined by an X-stretcher.
