McGuire Introduces New Dining Collection By Orlando Diaz-Azcuy | April 2006
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (April 2006) ? McGuire Furniture Company has introduced four new dining chair designs by Orlando Diaz-Azcuy. Working with McGuire?s signature rattan, Diaz-Azcuy has created clean forms that exemplify elegant simplicity. The designs epitomize McGuire's evolution of classic forms based on the architectural point of view of this world-renowned designer.
"As our partnership with Orlando moves into its tenth year, we are excited to offer new, modern yet timeless designs that once again push the boundaries of our signature medium," said Jason Phillips, president ? McGuire. "These designs capture Orlando?s commitment to rattan as a material uniquely well matched to contemporary living."
The four new dining chair designs are singular in inspiration and execution, but together respond to a need in the market for strong, clean lines that can easily be incorporated into a range of interiors. Diaz-Azcuy fashioned this versatile collection to appeal to a contemporary sensibility, adding style and grace to an interior without competing with it. All four are made of McGuire's signature rattan frames with rawhide bindings. McGuire's artisans meticulously form lengths of rattan into individual design elements which are subsequently bound with rawhide strips to create the frames; as the rawhide dries it shrinks, providing a continuously stronger bond over time.
The four chairs are shown in McGuire's Headlands Collection Textile PHBL113, a Basic Linen Weave in a color called 'Sand Dollar'. McGuire's Headlands Collection features a palette inspired by the natural beauty of the Northern California coast and the San Francisco Bay area. The collection includes 59 fabrics, all offering a surprisingly soft hand that makes them uniquely suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
Each textile group relies on interesting colorways, subtle patterns and an exceptional softness to create qualities not seen in performance fabric to date. McGuire has engineered the textiles to be the finest indoor/outdoor fabrics in the industry: soil and mildew-resistant, 100% solution-dyed acrylic and a three-year warranty against fading. The collection includes seven distinct weaves: Textured Solids; Horsehair Linen Weaves; Basic Linen Weaves; Checks; Woven Stripes; Ottoman Weaves and Chenille as well as two chenille cords.
The frames of this dining collection are available in all of McGuire's 43 couture finishes.
The four distinct dining chairs were designed to stand on their own but also to easily adapt to any interior; they are versatile enough to be used in commercial, hospitality, institutional, and residential installations.
"These designs are pure expressions of form," said Diaz-Azcuy, "that are ideally suited to the flexibility, strength and natural beauty of rattan."
The 'Big Sur' Chair, M-230, was inspired by the graceful lines, comfort and style of Diaz-Azcuy's earlier Toscana Lounge Chair. Both designs rely on sweeping rattan arms, a relaxed sloping back and a double rattan deck to create chairs that transcend time. With an upholstered seat and back, a deep seat and gentle curved arms, this chair is distinctly modern, yet versatile enough for any interior that it graces.
The 'Danube' Chair, M-231, is a flexible design that works in the dining room or as an occasional piece. Fully upholstered and refined in its proportions, the 'Danube' has sweeping lines that beautifully relate to the arm to the frame; likewise, the curved back elegantly mirrors the curvature of the signature frame detail. It is a striking design for contemporary living.
The 'Kerylos' Chair, M-232, is a Greek inspired design with a contemporary twist. Stripped to the essentials, this design goes well beyond many adaptations and is arresting in its absolute purity. The light, elegant frame is reminiscent of those developed by the ancient Greeks and perfected by the 5th century BC. The 'Kerylos' has two curved back legs and rounded back rails with a narrow, concave backrest. In an elegant detail, the backrest extends from the rails to the stretcher, long and pure in form.
The last of the four chairs, the 'Carmel', M-233, is remarkable in its architectural purity, referencing simple forms of Chinese ancestry. Its only embellishments are its cushion tufts, two on the back and four on the seat. The back legs are slightly curved; otherwise strong angles dominate the design. An emphatic back and seat utilize the strength of a rectangular shape; a double rattan deck is enhanced by an upholstered seat and back, resulting in a strong base with a comfortable seat and pitch.
